On 24 April 1943, Pierre Rochette was arrested in his hairdressing shop at 3 boulevard Robespierre, Reims. The shop was being used as a letter drop. Gilberte Rochette left her children with her mother in Togny aux Boeufs & moved in with her father-in-law, Albert Rochette, at 42 Rue Pierret, Reims. She found work as a waitress in the Restaurant de la Paix, Place d'Erlon.
It was there that Gilberte Rochette first came into contact with Conrad Lafleur, in August 1943 & agreed to act as his liaison agent. There is no record of her liaison activities. Lafleur only came to the house twice; on Friday, 24 December to deliver a suitcase containing a radio set, a revolver & some notes & then on Sunday, 26 December, to collect it. Rochette went with him then to act as his "vigie" - his lookout - during a transmission, probably at the home of Mme, Mondet in rue Lesage. Afterwards, she took the suitcase back to her house. At 16:00 on Wednesday, 29 December, Rochette returned the suitcase to Lafleur, for another transmission from Mme. Mondet's house. This time Raymonde Beuré was the "vigie".
At about 17:45, Lafleur arrived at the Restaurant de la Paix with the news that the Germans had surrounded the house during the transmission, but he had been able to escape. Rochette told him to shelter for the night at the home of Anita Vandendriessche, a waitress at the restaurant. They went there, 150 rue de Vesle, & soon after Raymonde Beuré arrived, having also managed to get away from rue Lesage. Potier arrived later.
The next morning, Thursday 30 December, Rochette was at work, when Raymond Jeunet, Beuré's fiancée, arrived at ~8 o'clock asking to speak to Gilberte. She was surprised that he was asking for her, as she did not know him. He claimed to have been arrested by the Gestapo, while searching for his fiancée. He asked her where Raymonde & Lafleur might be; she replied that Raymonde was probably at her parents' & that Lafleur was safe at the house of some friends. Five minutes later the Gestapo entered the restaurant, arrested her & took her to Rue Jeanne d'Arc - the Gestapo headquarters. They asked her where Lafleur was & when she replied that she did not know, the officer repeated exactly what she had said to Raymond Jeunet, whom she had seen in the next room, through the glass door. When she continued to deny knowledge of Lafleur, she was beaten & lost consciousness. Later, she was brought in front of Potier, whom she refused to recognise; she was again beaten. They transferred her to Robespierre prison, where she shared a cell with Mme. Tavernier of Reims & Lucienne Mulette of Fismes. 17 days later, she was again interrogated at Gestapo headquarters, where it was obvious that they knew everything except the whereabouts of Lafleur. She was tortured but refused to divulge anything.
Two days later, ~18 January 1944, Rochette was transferred to Laon prison, then to the Fort of Romainville. On 19 June she was deported to Sarrebrück Neue Bremm (#44657), then to Ravensbrück, where she was assigned to the Schönefeld kommando (forced-labour camp), working in the Heinkel factory.
The camp was liberated by the Russians on 14 April 1945 & Gilberte Rochette was repatriated in May/early June 1945.
